Deep Linking

Internet marketing and building a successful website requires one to continuously stay on top of the ever changing technology. One of the key ingredients to success is to take each and every term related to successful internet marketing and break it down to its basic form. Keeping the process as simple as possible has proven time and time again to be the way to build a successful campaign. However, one must also look a little deeper into how each process works, thereby taking some of the basics out and making things a little more complicated. This holds especially true when one is putting together internal links for their website or blog. Taking things to the next level in your link building campaign requires knowledge of a process that expands your strategy, and this process is known as deep linking.

By definition, deep linking is a link within one’s own website or blog that will direct a user to a specific piece of information, product or service that is not contained within the linked sites homepage. In short, it is creating a direct path to relevant information thereby reducing the amount of time a user has to spend trying to navigate their way around a website trying to find useful information.

Understanding the definition of this process is fine, but one may be asking “how this will help in fully optimizing their site”? A perfect example would be how affiliate marketers use deep linking to help boost sales and generate traffic to their affiliate site. Affiliates do not carry any inventory of their own and act as representative of the product or service they are selling. Therefore it is important for users of their site to be able to click on links that will produce relevant information as quickly and efficiently as possible. In the affiliate world, this is known as a click through rate. The higher the rate, the more sales one may be generating. Being able to eliminate information that is not relevant to a users request from a linked website is a powerful internet marketing tool.

There are some pitfalls when it comes to deep linking. Many opponents argue that the process eliminates the websites homepage from being a major contributor in one’s efforts to build a brand or service. It also unfairly directs users away from the homepage where companies have spent many advertising dollars promoting products or services via the homepage. Proponents argue that they should be free to link however they want because the internet is a public domain. They also conclude many times a deep link will keep the user from hitting a page that may be designed or structured poorly. Those who are against the process will many times instruct webmasters to try and develop code that will keep internet marketers from deep linking to their site. However, as of now, there is no definitive way to prevent one from using this technique.

No matter if you are for or against the process of deep linking, it is important to understand that it plays an important role is trying to fully optimize a website. Keep in mind that search engine spiders are continuously looking for relevant information based on a specific keyword search. This process also includes the relevancy of one’s internal links. These factors play a vital role in trying to get the highest possible ranking with the major search engines. That is why it is important to look a little past the basics in this strategy and take it to the next level. Although the strategy of keeping things simple will never change, once in a while you must dig your heels into techniques that are a bit more complicated.
