Resale Vs Resell, Which One To Use In A Sentence?

Resale Vs Resell, Which One To Use In A Sentence?

Hand-me-downs are pretty typical within families with kids close in age. It is seen even among friends. If a kid outgrows clothes or toys, why can’t someone else get to enjoy them? Once you become an adult, it is a whole different story. It is okay not to give it away for free, especially if you can make some money. But when you are ready to post those roller skates, you wonder, is this a resale or a resell?

“Resell” versus “resale” differs in that one is a verb and the other a noun. In a few words, resell is the action of selling something previously bought. In contrast, a resale is an event around the reselling of such previously acquired goods or items.

Sustainability is the idea that people can use things without completely destroying them and at the same time continue to use them for a long time. This idea is something that has been around for the last 30 years, and it’s now gaining more attention not only from businesses but individuals.

Many people have been trying to adopt a more sustainable life only to buy what’s necessary and get rid of those things they no longer need; some often go to thrift stores to get clothing items still in good condition. On the other hand, many people would also sell previously owned clothing they don’t think they will be using again. When that happens, is it a resale or a resell?

Where Did This Come From?

Thousands of years ago, people were on their own when it came to surviving. Then trading started. If someone could grow something on the land, they could trade it for meat that another person hunted down.

At some point, those people acquired more than they needed and at the same time didn’t need to trade, so they started selling. In today’s commerce, the selling of goods and services continues to be a lucrative business.

Resale Vs Resell

The word “sale” has a German origin. It is a mix of Old English (sala) and Modern English (sell). The word resale is a noun that means having something (second-hand, or having a previous owner) to sell after using it, usually to a stranger.

Both businesses and individuals have resales. Depending on what a person is looking for when searching online, they can type in the following words:

  • Resale shops. This search will provide them access to any type of business that runs thrifting or consignment stores in their location.
  • Resale certificates. This search will provide the information needed for suppliers to resell goods. It is different from a resale license, where this certificate is issued to those who sell things subject to sales tax.
  • Resale HDB. This search is about people looking to buy an apartment.
  • Resale portal. This will be a website where people can sell or buy an apartment.
  • Resale tickets. This search will answer whether it is illegal to resell tickets and where to find tickets to buy.
  • Resale price maintenance. People will search for this when they want to get information on whether it is okay for a supplier to fix the price of a product, sell at a specific price, not sell below the agreed price, or offer additional discounts than those already agreed upon.
  • Resale value. This type of search is done when people are looking for information about the value amount that their assets would sell for at some point in the future. This applies to real estate, vehicles, and other goods.

The word resell is a verb that means to sell something again. Another word derived from this action is “reseller,” which is the term assigned to the person or business that does the reselling. Some of the things people can search for online about reselling are as follows:

  • Resell online. People may be looking into entrepreneurship and wish to get information on how to start a reselling business.
  • Reseller club. People might be interested in buying servers, hosting, or domains to build a website.
  • Resell Rights. Reselling rights allow a person to sell someone else’s products and keep all the profits.

To Resell And To Drop Ship Is The Same?

When you advertise yourself as a reseller, some people may misunderstand the service you are offering and at times even get it confused with dropshipping, as they feel it reaches the same goal. They are both business opportunities with little commitment or capital required, but there are a few differences between the two that could clarify any doubts about your potential customers.

  • They work differently. The person who wants to resell or dropship something does require buying something to sell. On the one hand, someone who resells would usually buy the product from a supplier or company; whereas, the drop shipper focuses on the marketing process more than anything, receiving the product request first before purchasing the product.
  • The capital required comes from different sources. If you want to resell stuff, it is either something you already own and wish to get rid of or is something you buy and then sell. To dropship, you first receive the money from the customer before purchasing the item.
  • The benefits. The benefits if you resell are higher than in dropshipping. If you sell something you already owned, you can set whatever price you wish. If you buy goods to resell, you can do it in bulk and get a better price to buy. If you dropship, you need to match the price in the market, and there’s always a chance people won’t buy from you.
  • The risks. For the person who resells, the risks are higher since they already have the product to sell; if there are no customers, the person reselling might lose the investment. There is no need to buy a product for someone who drops ships if there are no customers.
  • Services to consumers. The person who resells does all the work, from buying, collecting the money to packing and delivering. The person who drops ships does it all from a computer. There is no need to meet the customer or see the product; it goes directly from the vendor to the customer.

When Do I Use Each Term?

A resale is a “thing,” and to resell is an “action” done. If you have stuff lying around and want to get some money out of it, you can say you are looking to resell. But if you attend a bazaar kind of thing, where people are selling all sorts of stuff both new and used, then you are at a resale.
